How to Install a Second Battery In Cars

You can isolate the second battery in a marine dual battery system. The proper battery isolation device will prevent accidental discharges of your starter battery, which can leave you without power.

For safety, disconnect the black or negative lead from the primary battery. The location of the R140 Isolator should be chosen. A sidewall or dividing wall is preferable near the primary battery. Measure the length of the red cable that you need to run from the R140 Isolator into the positive terminal of your second battery. This length can be cut from the coil of the red cable that comes with the dual battery kit.

You can do this by connecting the negative terminals to one another or using a common conductive source like a metal or aluminum wall. Connect the small, black negative wire of the R140 battery Isolator to the other end. Use the zip ties provided by the dual battery kit to attach the cables.

Use the provided screws to attach the R140 battery Isolator to the desired spot. The small black ground wire should now be connected to the common ground of both batteries.

The short black cable will ensure that both batteries are connected to a common ground. You can do this by connecting the negative terminals to one another or to a common conductive source like a metal or aluminum wall. Connect the small, black negative wire of the R140 battery Isolator to the other end. Use the zip ties provided by the dual battery kit to attach the cables.
